The Huskies boys varsity basketball team traveled to friendly Fridley on Wednesday to take on the Eagles of Totino Grace in the first round of the section tournament. The boys earned the six seed while the Eagles, who were ranked #6 in the state, mysteriously were voted in as the third seed.
Things started ominously for the boys as senior starting point guard Mickey Jah was knocked out of the game two minutes in and would not return due to injury. This put a significant dent in the game plan as the Huskies hoped to use Jah’s quickness to their advantage against the much bigger Eagles. The boys regrouped yet found themselves down 9 at the break by a score of 28-19.
The second half started well of the boys as Tait Nelson scored a basket and the free throw on the first offensive possession to cut the Eagles’ lead to 28-22. From there, the hosts went on an 18-0 run which blew the game open. The Huskies were unable to mount a comeback and the season ended with a 62-34 loss.
Tait Nelson ended the game with 14 points, while Aaron Smith put in 6 and Abe Jaeger Mountain scored 4. Eli Forsline and Joe Flett each scored a three pointer while Remy Carre and Matt Green each added two.
The team would like to thank the fans for their great support this season as well as 8 seniors who gave everything they had to the program. It was a fun year highlighted by buzzer-beating victories (Bloomington Kennedy) and historic upsets (on the road vs. #3 Columbia Heights).
