The Huskies boys varsity basketball team hosted the six-time defending state champions DeLaSalle Islanders on Tuesday on the night when our seniors were honored.
The Huskies came out in their 2-3 zone in an attempt to force the visitors to beat them from the perimeter. Early on, it was effective as the Islanders were tepid from outside. But future Minnesota Gopher Gabe Kalscheur started feeling it and ended the first half with 16 points including three 3-pointers. Still, the Huskies entered the break within striking distance as they trailed 37-28.
The Huskies kept fighting as the second half moved along and found themselves down 48-38 with 13 minutes left in the game. From that point on, the pressure of the Islanders wore them down and the hosts started getting loose with the ball. The Islanders were getting layups and cruised on their way to an 82-56 victory.
Aaron Smith led the charge with 20 points while Drew Nelson and Mickey Jah each added 11. Tait Nelson scored 8, while Sully Jahnke put in 4 and Abe Jaeger Mountain scored a pair.
Before the game, eight seniors (Smith, Jahnke, Jah, Drew Nelson, Remy Carre, Josh Goldsmith, Alaaeldin Soltan, and Matt Green) were honored and thanked for their contributions to the boys basketball program. They will be missed!
The Huskies wrap up the regular season as they travel to Holy Angels on Friday.
