The Huskies boys varsity basketball team kicked the season off by hosting section rival St. Paul Como Park on Friday night. The Huskies were excited to get going as they would unveil a mix of returning starters with hungry young players fighting to get into the rotation.
Despite some rebounding difficulties, the Huskies played a solid first half and took a 41-22 lead into the break. They methodically wore down the Cougars and forced the visitors into contested shots. It was much of the same in the second half as the Huskies were able to empty the bench and get everyone varsity action.
Senior Aaron Smith had a strong all around game with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and played outstanding help defense. Sophomore Tait Nelson produced a solid stat line with 26 points while adding 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Mickey Jah was the third member of the Huskies in double figures with 11 points, while Drew Nelson added 9 on a trio of threes and Derek Hergenrader scored six with a pair of threes. Sully Jahnke and Mack Ibekwe both scored their first varsity points in the win.
The Huksies face a huge challenge at home on Tuesday night as they host the third ranked St. Thomas Academy Cadets.
