The Huskies boys varsity basketball team wrapped up the regular season on Friday night as they traveled to Richfield to take on the Academy of Holy Angels.
The boys were tuning up for section playoffs and came out looking to play with playoff intensity. Despite missing three layups to start the game, the defense was sharp and the boys held the Stars’ leading scorer without a basket in the first half. The Huskies did not shoot well however and found themselves in a 29-23 hole at the break.
The boys ratcheted up the defensive intensity in the second half and utilized efficient offensive possessions to take a one point lead with under a minute to play. Following a controversial Holy Angels turnover, the boys beat the press with Sully Jahnke scoring with 11 seconds left. This brought the Huskies’ lead to 3. The Angels brought the ball up and appeared to be in disarray, but senior Max Gerstner jacked up a 25 foot three pointer at the buzzer that hit nothing but the bottom of the net as the game was suddenly tied and headed to overtime.
The boys clamped down in the extra session and quickly stormed out to a 9 point lead. They held on with excellent free throw shooting by making 9 of their last 10 attempts and walked out with a 58-51 win.
Aaron Smith led the boys with 16 points, including the 1000th point of his career. Mickey Jah added 13, and Tait Nelson and Sully Jahnke each scored 10. Drew Nelson finished the game just short of double figures with 9.
The boys earned the six seed in the section and will travel to Totino Grace on Wednesday to compete in the first round of playoffs.
