St Anthony Village High School
Fridley High School
Under blustery skies on Thursday, the Huskies traveled to host Fridley High School to face off for the Section 5A Championship. These two teams had faced each other earlier in the year at St Anthony with Tigers winning 6-1 in a match that could very easily had swayed to the Huskies with a bit of luck and more consistent play. So the Huskies came to play as underdogs who believed they had a shot to create an upset. Unfortunately, as the matches unfolded, it was not to be the Huskies day as they fell to the Tigers 5-2.
Nevertheless, there were some excellent performances put forth by the singles players Nick Kroening (win at #1), Kevin McCann (loss at #2), and Quinn Benda (win at #4). Kroening and Benda cruise to easy win and the Huskies 2 points, while McCann had an incredible match against a rival Nic Feit that ended in a 3rd set tie breaker.
The double teams all seemed to struggle with the high winds and just never got it going. The team of Sean Johnson and Mark Mathison did put together a run in the second set at #2 doubles, but ultimately fell with slightly inconsistent play down the stretch.
In the end, both teams had plenty to be proud of, but the Tigers will be representing Section 5A in the state team tournament held in a couple of weeks. Next up for the Huskies is the individual singles and doubles tournament beginning next Monday at Coon Rapids High School at 8am. Kevin McCann and Nick Kroening will have an excellent chance of advancing to the state tournament if they continue with their stellar play.
