This spring, seven SAVHS baseball alumni are playing college! Here’s a quick update on each player and his team:
Zach Siggelkow (SAVHS ’14) is a Sophomore Pitcher at St. Cloud State University. He has a 3-0 record for the Huskies in 11 appearances, tallying 22 strikeouts as against only 3 walks. Opposing hitters have a mere .269 average against Siggelkow, who SCSU has turned to for the steady hand down the stretch, earning a big 4-2 win over Winona State last week. He also pitched 7 solid innings in relief for the Huskies against #19 Minnesota State Mankato. St. Cloud State hosts Bemidji State in a pair of doubleheaders this weekend to close their regular season.
Sam Melchior (SAVHS ’14) is a Junior Pitcher at the University of Minnesota Morris, pacing the Cougars with a 3-2 record in 5 appearances, with 9 strikeouts. While the Cougars have struggled on the season, Sam has provided valuable leadership and experience to assist the young Morris squad. He came on in relief in a sweep against North Central, pitching 1.2 innings with a strikeout to preserve a Cougar win. Morris hosts Northwestern-Roseville for a doubleheader on Wednesday, then ends their regular season at Northland College in Ashland Wisconsin for a doubleheader this weekend.
Nick Peterson (center of photo – SAVHS ’16) is a Freshman Pitcher at the University of Minnesota Morris, with no decisions in 5 appearances. He has 16 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched, and allowed only 2 walks. The Cougars clearly have a lot of confidence and trust in Peterson, as he was facing batters against Morris’ top competition.
Noah Bluth (SAVHS ’14) is a Junior Catcher at Minnesota State-Mankato, earning a starting spot behind the dish for the #14 ranked Mavericks. At the plate, Bluth is batting a solid .248 with 25 hits in 107 at-bats, but driving in a very good 20 runs. He has only struck out 13 times. He’s proven himself to be a solid backstop, with no errors in 269 chances as a catcher. Unfortunately, Bluth has been battling a bit of the injury bug late in the year. The Mavericks are at Augustana (SD) for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend to close out their regular season.
Ryan Bernardy (SAVHS ’14) is a Junior Outfielder for the University of Sioux Falls, and has seen action in 10 games for the Cougars, holding down a .231 batting average. He has walked twice and struck out twice, with one home run, and no errors in the field. USF has struggled down the stretch and will close their regular season hosting a pair of doubleheaders this weekend against Wayne St.
Bennett Wiggins (SAVHS ’15) is a Sophomore Pitcher at St. John’s University. He has a 1-0 record for the Johnnies in 6 appearances, giving up only 6 earned runs in 14 innings, with 6 strikeouts and only 2 walks, and holds a 3.86 ERA, including an inning in relief against archrival St. Thomas last week, yielding no runs and a strikeout in one inning pitched. The Johnnies host Macalester in a doubleheader early this week, and close out their regular season with a doubleheader at Concordia-Moorhead this weekend.
Joe Wehr (SAVHS ’16) is a Freshman Pitcher at Century College, holding a 2-1 record in 5 appearances and 19.1 innings for the Wood Ducks. He has yielded only 15 earned runs but 20 strikeouts in that span, and they rely on him to be a valuable relief pitcher. The Wood Ducks play Iowa Lakes and Dakota County Tech this week before closing out their regular season.
