Fridley High School
St Anthony Village High School
St Anthony Huskies played host to the visiting Fridley Tigers on Tuesday. The weather looked like it wouldn’t cooperate in the morning, but by afternoon, the courts were dry and tennis was underway.
The team match was much more competitive than the final score would appear. Three matches went three sets. Nick Kroening, at first singles won his first set and had two match points in the second before losing to a tenacious opponent in three sets. Second doubles, featuring Sean Johnson and Mark Mathison lost their first set, roared back in the second, and then ultimately fell in the third. The lone Huskies win came from 9th grader Quinn Benda at 4th singles. Getting off the a slow start, Benda fell quickly in the first set, but then came to light to cruise in the second set and then finally a third set super-tiebreaker.
Also falling for the Huskies was second singles Kevin McCann, third singles Tenzin Chaksam, and doubles teams of Sam Kroening/Marshall O’Meara and Henry Scamehorn/Michale Wehmas.
Next up for the Huskies will be Irondale on Wednesday. Varsity at home, JV away. If you’re not busy, come on out and support the team.
