GO HUSKIES!

Feb 22. – Mar. 1: Kia Kivi

12th grade gymnast, Kia Kivi.

12th grade gymnast, Kia Kivi.

Kia Kivi is making her second appearance as the SAVHS Athlete of the Week this year after completing one of her most memorable performances last Saturday at the MSHSL state gymnastics meet.  She finished off her career with a personal best, scoring 37.375 on her all-around score!  Kivi finished in 8th place overall for the all-around, 8th place overall in the uneven bars routine, and 13th place overall in the floor routine!  Kivi was able to accomplish this coming off a badly sprained ankle the month before. She really showed some grit and determination during her performances.

The state gymnastics meet ranks as her most memorable meet. The Sports Pavilion at the University of Minnesota was nearly full and the energy level was high in the building.  It was a really fun atmosphere. Kivi will be attending the University of Minnesota next year to major in Food Science.  Her dream job would be to travel the world and recreate the desserts she has tried from her travels in her very own bakery.   We are proud to call Kivi the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Feb. 15 – Feb. 22: Xavier Mansfield

12th grade Nordic skier, Xavier Mansfield.

12th grade Nordic skier, Xavier Mansfield.

Xavier Mansfield is a senior Nordic Skier for the SLP / St. Anthony co-op.  This past week has been a special one for Mansfield. He wrapped up a great year by finishing in first place at the MSHSL state AA Nordic Ski meet last Thursday!  There are two races that take place during the state meet to name the champion.  After the morning skate race, Mansfield was sitting in third place and was 20 seconds behind the skier in first place.

During the afternoon classic race Mansfield turned on the afterburners, making up the 20 seconds and then some to win the state title by an impressive nine seconds!
Xavier is currently taking classes at the University of Minnesota as a PSEO student this year.  He plans on moving his studies east next year, but is undecided on where exactly.  Nordic Ski is in Mansfield’s future and he will continue to ski at the next level.  We are proud to name Mansfield the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations on a great year and a state title!

Feb. 8 – Feb. 15: Tait Nelson

9th grade basketball player, Tait Nelson.

9th grade basketball player, Tait Nelson.

Tait Nelson returns this week for his second stint as Athlete of the Week.  Nelson’s contributions have helped the Huskies boys varsity basketball team win their last two games as he has averaged 18.5 points per game.  He had a particularly impressive game Tuesday night in the win at St. Paul Harding as he scored 31 points while making 6 of 7 shots from three point land!  In addition to his scoring, the freshmen has helped the team with his strong defense as the Huskies have held their last two opponents to an average of 44 points per game.

Nelson isn’t superstitious.  He doesn’t do anything in particular before each game, he just goes out and plays.  There aren’t any songs that he listens to before games because he doesn’t listen to music!  He does have a favorite meal though, Asian food featuring Filipino egg rolls.  We are proud to name Nelson the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Feb. 1 – Feb. 8: Jack Moore

12th grade hockey player, Jack Moore.

12th grade hockey player, Jack Moore.

Jack Moore is this week’s Athlete of the Week.  Moore, a senior forward and captain of the Irondale / St. Anthony Knights hockey team has been on a point surge this week.  Last Thursday Moore tallied a hat trick and two assists in the Knights 7-1 victory over Osseo! The following Saturday Moore added another goal and assist to beat long time rival, Totino-Grace, 4-2!  In rare fashion, Moore scored every one of his goals last week going 5-hole!

Moore has made some great hockey memories throughout his career but the victory over Totino-Grace last week is one that really sticks out to him as a favorite.  If Moore were to win the lottery today the first purchase he would make would be a Lamborghini. The Knights have four more games before playoffs begin and senior night is on the horizon! Next Thursday, February 16th, the Knights will host Andover for senior night at the National Sports Center.  Puck drops at 7:30!  We are proud to name Moore the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Jan. 25 – Feb. 1: Rhys Langums

12th grade basketball player, Rhys Langums.

12th grade basketball player, Rhys Langums.

Rhys Langums is this week’s Athlete of the Week.  In Langums’ last five games, he has been on a tear while averaging 24 points and 12 rebounds per game.  In addition to the double-double average, Langums has made a concerted effort to improve his free throw shooting over that stretch and has improved his conversion rate from 43% to 67%.  This has made a huge difference to the team’s success.  The Huskies had a big win on Tuesday over St. Agnes in overtime and will finish the week with another conference game at Brooklyn Center on Friday night!

Langums sees basketball in his future.  He would like to play college basketball somewhere and is keeping his options open at this time as a non-commit.  If there was one food that Langums could live off of for the rest of his life it would be turkey bacon!  We are proud to name Langums the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Jan. 18 – Jan. 25: Abby Bollensen

12th grade hockey player, Abby Bollensen.

12th grade hockey player, Abby Bollensen.

Abby Bollensen is a senior captain on the Irondale / St. Anthony hockey team.  This weekend Abby had a monumental game, leading the Knights over Armstrong / Cooper, 5-1.  Bollensen had a hat trick in the game… and then put another one in for good measure!  Her four goal game is going to be one to remember for a long time.  The girls have been on a nice little run as of late, winning three of their last four games.  They are host to Mounds View on Thursday before they have their 2nd annual “Stick it to Cancer Night” on Saturday against Totino-Grace.

Bollensen has many fond memories from her hockey experience but the team trip to Hibbing this year is her favorite!  On a non-hockey related note, Abby would hope that the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter would place her in the Gryffindor house if given the opportunity!  We are proud to call Abby the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Jan. 11 – Jan. 18: Ava Grotting

11th grade Nordic Skier, Ava Grotting.

11th grade Nordic Skier, Ava Grotting.

Ava Grotting is a junior on the Nordic Ski team and is this week’s Athlete of the Week!  Grotting has led the way this past week for the girls, setting personal records (PR) along the way.  Last Wednesday, Grotting finished in the top 20 and set a PR of 23:30!  Her PR did not last for long.  Saturday’s meet on the tough Giant’s Ridge track saw Grotting beat her best by 16 seconds while setting the pace for the team!  Grotting has just been getting back in to competition after missing sometime this fall.  She is getting back in to form and is looking to continue to improve each week!

Nordic Ski is Ava’s passion during the winter months.  During the summer she enjoys starting each day running with the cross country team and also spends time volunteering at her local library three days a week.  If she could choose to have any special ability she would like to be able to speak every language fluently!  We are proud to call Grotting our SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Jan. 4 – Jan. 11: Kalli Wiebusch

12th grade basketball player, Kalli Wiebusch.

12th grade basketball player, Kalli Wiebusch.

Kalli Wiebusch is this week’s Athlete of the Week!  Wiebusch is a senior who starts at point guard for the girls varsity team.  Wiebusch sees the court well, and is consistent night in and night out. She was instrumental Tuesday night during the conference home opener against DeLaSalle on both ends of the floor.  Kalli added 18 big points, leading the team in scoring, but was arguably more effective on the defensive side of the floor with her relentless style of play. The Huskies rallied back from an eight point deficit at half to win 74-71!
Wiebusch has a few pregame rituals.  She likes to listen to music and dance with her teammates.  Some of her favorite basketball memories have been games played against conference foe, St. Agnes.  The intensity against the Aggies always seems to be amplified and the games come down to the wire. We are proud to name Wiebusch the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Winter Break : Bonnie Zeller and Aaron Smith

12th grade basketball player, Bonnie Smith, and 11th grade basketball player, Aaron Smith.

12th grade basketball player, Bonnie Zeller, and 11th grade basketball player, Aaron Smith.

The St. Anthony basketball programs both had successful winter breaks during their holiday tournaments!  The girls hosted the first of many “Tie it Teal” tournaments and the boys traveled to South St. Paul for their holiday tournament. Both teams had great tournaments and Bonnie Zeller and Aaron Smith were instrumental towards the team’s success.

Zeller and the whole Huskies team got their tournament started off right with an 82-39 victory over Richfield.  Next, Zeller led the way scoring wise with a 16 point performance in a 74-47 victory over St. Croix Prep.  In the championship game Zeller led the way again with 14 points against a tough Tartan squad.  Tartan ultimately won the game 61-52.  Zeller also is known for her tenacity on the defensive end of the floor and overall basketball IQ!
Zeller has one ritual that she does for each game, she always makes sure that she is wearing a scrunchie.  She likes the team tradition of singing a song in the locker room before each home game, as well!

Smith is a forward and two year starter for the Huskies.  He helped lead the Huskies to a 3-0 record over the past week which included a championship during the South St. Paul Holiday tournament!  In those games, Smith averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals while shooting 45% from three point land!
Smith has no pregame rituals or superstitions.  He used to always eat skittles before games but he has stopped doing that!

We are proud to name these two our winter break Athletes of the Week!  Congratulations and GO HUSKIES!

Dec. 14 – Dec 21: Tait Nelson

9th grade basketball player, Tait Nelson.

9th grade basketball player, Tait Nelson.

Tait Nelson is this week’s Athlete of the Week.  Tait is a freshman who starts at point guard for the boys varsity team.  In three games this past week, Tait helped lead the Huskies to a 2-1 mark by averaging 18 points and 5 assists per game while shooting over 40% from three point range.  Last year, Tait set a precedent by becoming the first middle school boy to make the Huskies’ varsity basketball team.  The experience as an 8th grader helped transition Tait into a more prominent role this season.  The Huskies play again tonight when they take on Bloomington Kennedy at home!
With winter break beginning today Nelson was asked what some of his plans were during the time off.  He plans to have a snowball fight.  Another fun fact about Tait is that his favorite pair of shoes he has ever owned were a black pair of Fila’s that he wore in the 6th grade.  We are proud to name Tait the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Dec. 7 – Dec. 14: Kia Kivi

12th grade gymnast, Kia Kivi.

12th grade gymnast, Kia Kivi.

Kia is a senior on the St. Anthony gymnastics team.  On Tuesday, she helped propel the Huskies towards a victory against Bloomington Jefferson with final team totals of 123.825 – 120.775!  Kivi scored well in all of her events.  She posted an all around score of 36.425, earning first place honors at the meet!  The gymnastics team is back at it again tonight when they host Minneapolis Washburn at the St. Anthony Village Community Center, beginning at 6pm.
Kivi began gymnastics when she was three years old.  When she was ten she received her most memorable childhood gift around the holidays, a Dippin’ Dots Ice Cream Maker.  Next year, Kivi plans to attend the University of Minnesota to major in food science.  She currently is a part time PSEO student and has been taking classes at the U of M this fall and winter.  We are proud to call Kia the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Nov. 30 – Dec. 7: Nicole Zielsdorf

12th grade basketball player, Nicole Zielsdorf.

12th grade basketball player, Nicole Zielsdorf.

Nicole is a senior on the Huskies basketball team.  This past week the Huskies have won both of their games and sharpshooter Zielsdorf has been a big reason why.  Last Friday, the Huskies went on the road to take on the Wildcats from Waconia.  Trailing at half, 25-29, the Huskies rallied back to win 60-54.  Zielsdorf led the scoring with 15 points.  Tuesday night, Zielsdorf was on fire in the first half against Trinity, scoring 21 of the teams 38 first half points!  The Huskies look to make it three in a row tonight when they take on the Packers from South St. Paul High School at home!
Zielsdorf is undecided on where she will be studying when it comes to college but playing basketball at the next level is something that she may want to explore.  She also has been deemed the nickname “Threes-dorf”, which is fantastic.  We are proud to name Nicole the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Nov. 23 – Nov. 30: Emma Fagerlee

10th grade hockey player, Emma Fagerlee.

10th grade hockey player, Emma Fagerlee.

Emma is a sophomore forward on the Irondale / St. Anthony girls hockey team.  Last night, the girls had a decisive win over Anoka, 4-0, and Fagerlee played a big role in the team’s victory.  In the first period, Fagerlee got the scoring started.  She gathered a rebound from a shot from the point and put it away, top shelf.  In the second period, Fagerlee earned the first assist on the final goal of the game to seal the deal.  She walked out of the corner with the puck after winning a battle and found teammate Megan Lyke in front of the net; Lyke did the rest to put the puck in the back of the net.  Fagerlee’s first game on the Knights was the first game of last season, which leads in to her favorite hockey memory when she scored the first goal of the season last year.  When asked if she has a favorite hockey team it seemed like the Minnesota Wild was an easy decision, mainly due to her favorite player, Zach Parise. We are proud to call Emma the SAVHS Athlete of the Week.

Congratulations!

GO HUSKIES

Oct. 26 – Nov. 2: Maddy Onken

12th grade soccer player, Maddy Onken.

12th grade soccer player, Maddy Onken.

Maddy is a senior defender on the Strikers soccer team.  Yesterday, during the Strikers senior night, Onken played a big role in securing a 10-7 victory over Stillwater!  This was also the Strikers final game of the regular season before they begin playoffs.  Onken plays with great tenacity and consistency.  The Strikers rely on her to move the ball up to the forwards and Maddy delivers with big clears throughout the game!  The Strikers are excited about playoffs this year and hope to make it back to the state tournament for the second year in a row!  When Maddy was asked what super power she would like to have she chose the ability to swim really fast and to have water powers.  We are proud to name Maddy the St. Anthony Village Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Oct. 19 – Oct. 26: Joe Lynch

10th grade cross country runner, Joe Lynch.

10th grade cross country runner, Joe Lynch.

Joe Lynch is a sophomore on the cross country team.  Last week, during the conference meet, Lynch was one of four Huskies to finish in the top ten!  Lynch finished 3rd overall with a time of 18:15.  The brother tandem of Andrew and Tait Nelson rounded out the conference top five, finishing fourth and fifth respectfully.  Marcus Bradt finished tenth overall.  The boys finished in first place as a team for back-to-back-to-back conference championships!  The Huskies are back at it again tomorrow for their sectional meet at Anoka HS, beginning at 3pm.  Lynch is used to training long distance, as he is also a member of the Nordic Ski team during the winter and he runs the long distance events during the Track & Field season.  Something that Joe enjoys are internet memes.  His favorite meme currently is of a frog that is riding on a unicycle.  We are proud to name Lynch the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

GO HUSKIES!

Oct. 12 – Oct. 19: Cullen Anderson

12th grade soccer player, Cullen Anderson.

12th grade soccer player, Cullen Anderson.

Cullen Anderson is a senior captain on the SLP/St. Anthony soccer team.  This past week the Panthers have played their quarterfinal and semifinal matches in the 5AA section playoffs.  During the quarterfinals against Champlin Park, Anderson had a goal and assist in their 2-1 victory.  In their semifinal match against Centennial, Anderson added another assist to tie the game up 2-2 towards the end of regulation time.  A victor could not be found in the extra time period and the game went down to penalties.  Cullen was called upon to take a penalty and was able to convert!  The Panthers won 6-5 in penalties and ultimately ended up in the section final Thursday night where they will host the Mounds View Mustangs at Spring Lake Park HS at 7pm! Anderson has said that he would like to play soccer in college, but is still undecided on where he will go.  One celebration he would like to do but knows that it would end up in a card is the “shoe shiner”.  This is where after a goal he would run over to a teammate to have him shine up his goal scoring boot!  We are proud to name Cullen the SAVHS Athlete of the Week.

Congratulations!

Oct. 5 – Oct. 12: Alexa Beguhl

12th grade volleyball player, Alexa Beguhl.

12th grade volleyball player, Alexa Beguhl.

This week’s student-athlete of the week is senior Alexa Beguhl.  Alexa is one of three volleyball captains this season and has been a solid leader all year long.  This past week, the Huskies have gone 2-1 and Alexa has been a big part of the team’s success.  Statistically, she has tallied 29 kills while swinging at 23.6%.  She has also played some great defense, accumulating 40 digs at an average of 3.6 digs per set this past week.  Alexa has a great sense of humor.  When asked, if you could pick a different time period to live during, when would you pick?  Her response was that she would have liked to come over on the Santa Maria and help found America. That way Columbus Day would be Beguhl Day!  We are proud to name Alexa our Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations!

Sep. 28 – Oct. 5: Marcus Bradt

12th grade cross country runner, Marcus Bradt.

12th grade cross country runner, Marcus Bradt.

In his third year of cross country Marcus Bradt has emerged as an excellent senior leader.  As one of the team captains, Marcus has done a great deal of leading by example as he is regularly one of the hardest working and most devoted team members.  Immediately after joining as a sophomore it was apparent that Marcus was someone who enjoyed the difficult challenge of distance running.  Now as a senior Marcus’ hard work and dedication have been paying off, exemplified by his consistency as one of the top boys runners on the team.  As the team is heading down to the end of the season Marcus will be working to help the boys team see how well they can do in the upcoming conference championship on Oct. 29th at Battle Creek Park.  Regardless of how Marcus does or how the team finishes the year, the leadership and work ethic Marcus has shown has rubbed off on the large number of younger runners on the team.  This influence will help the program for years to come.  Marcus has set his sights on attending the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management next year to continue his education.

Congratulations Marcus on being named the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Sep. 21 – Sep. 28: Marley Lund

12th grade swimmer, Marley Lund.

12th grade swimmer, Marley Lund.

Senior Captain Marley Lund was selected Athlete of the Week based on her dedication to leadership and athletic performance.  Marley sets a great example for her teammates on how to be a team player.  She glows a shining light of positive energy and her attitude during practices and meets serves as a fantastic team motivator.  Marley gives 100% to every race she swims as shown by the consistency in her times. She is also one of the top scoring swimmers at every meet this year.  Marley has spent the last six fall seasons on the St. Anthony Swim Team.  During that time she has made a lot of good memories, too many too count. Her most lasting memory of the swim team was when she decided to attend her first captain’s practice as a 7th grader and immediately she felt as if she was welcomed in to a big family!  We are proud to name Marley the SAVHS Athlete of the Week.

Congratulations!

Sep. 14 – Sep. 21: Dan Carpenter

12th grade football player, Dan Carpenter.

12th grade football player, Dan Carpenter.

Dan is a senior captain on the Huskies football team.  He plays on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and safety and had a great week against the Millers of Minneapolis Washburn last Friday.  Carpenter pulled in two touchdowns at wide out, recorded eight tackles, and tacked on an interception in the Huskies 28-34 loss.  Carpenter has a great motor.  He is the type of player to never give up on a play, he works hard the entire game, he continues to stay positive during the game, and he is positive towards his teammates.  Next year, Dan hopes to continue on his studies at Mankato in the ROTC program.  If Dan had any special ability to choose from he would choose to be able to catch anything, every time, no matter what.  The Huskies next game is on Friday night at home where they will take on St. Croix Lutheran HS.  Kick-off is at 7pm!  We are proud to call Dan our Athlete of the Week.

Congratulations Dan!

Sep. 7 – Sep. 14: Zofia Smith

12th grade cross country runner, Zofia Smith.

12th grade cross country runner, Zofia Smith.

Senior Captain Zofia Smith has had a great start to the cross country season.  Through the first three meets this year Zofia has been the number one runner for the Huskies. Last week, her 1st place overall finish at the Fridley Peach Run helped the Huskies finish in 1st place as a team!  Throughout the summer Zofia has been working hard and showing great leadership skills in an effort to help herself and the team towards a successful season.  One of Zofia’s favorite memories during her cross country career was witnessing coach Victorine’s wacky yoga routine during practice. When Zofia graduates she hopes to begin her studies at Grand Canyon University with her sights set on becoming a hygienist.  Both the boys and the girls teams are back in action this Thursday when they travel to St. Francis to compete in their annual invite.

Nice Job Zofia!

Aug. 31 – Sep. 7: Hannah Pawlyshyn

12th grade soccer player, Hannah Pawlyshyn.

12th grade soccer player, Hannah Pawlyshyn.

Hannah Pawlyshyn is a senior captain of the SLP/St. Anthony soccer team.  The Panthers have had a great week, and much of it is due to Hannah’s natural ability to lead on and off of the field.  She has been building off a strong 2015-16 season with a “wall like” start to the season as one of the team’s starting defenders.  Hannah is a great communicator on the field and is always looking for ways to improve.  Yesterday, the Panthers finished with a draw against conference foe Anoka, 1-1.  Last Thursday, the Panthers were able to top Elk River in a 2-0 victory.  A fun fact about Hannah is that the weirdest thing she has ever eaten was due to a dare, sardines.  She did not like them!  We are proud to name Hannah the SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations Hannah!

Aug. 24 – Aug. 31: Martha White

9th grade tennis player, Martha White.

9th grade tennis player, Martha White.

Martha is a freshman on the girls tennis team. This past week Martha was a leader on the court in numerous ways. On Tuesday, against the Polars from North St. Paul, Martha helped the Huskies achieve a complete team victory, 7-0. On Monday, Martha was a leader in the form of sportsmanship when the Huskies lost a close match against Washburn, 4-3. Last Thursday the tennis team was able to enjoy a tournament in Duluth where the Huskies fell to the highly skilled Hounds from Duluth East but rebounded nicely to defeat Cloquet. Last Friday, the Huskies finished off the week with a win over Washington Technology Magnet School, 6-1. Martha is excited about getting back to school so she can participate in the fall play! She enjoys everything about musical theater. We are proud to call Martha our SAVHS Athlete of the Week!

Congratulations Martha!
